How Did John F. Kennedy Act Through the Cuban Missile Crisis

The Cuban missile crisis of 1962 brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. What was at stake in the crisis, and how do you assess President Kennedy’s response to Khrushchev’s provocation? Was Kennedy prudent or rash, suitably tough or needlessly belligerent? By Jeremy Leung 299722 USA The World 131-236 The Cuban Missile Crisis was perhaps the closest that humankind had ever become to experiencing a thermonuclear war. In October 1962, the world watched perilously, as U.S. president John F. Kennedy warned his people of the amalgamation of Soviet arms in Cuba. John F. Kennedy refused to accept â€Å"offensive† Soviet artillery in such close proximity to the U.S., but Soviet chairman Nikita Khrushchev had already planned a stealthily†¦show more content†¦The reasons why McNamara and Kennedy and other U.S. politicians were so fearful of a nuclear was because according to U.S. analysts at the time, the 24 MRBM’s (Medium range-ballistic missiles) and sixteen IRBM’s (intermediate-range ballistic missiles) that were found in Cuba had significantly increased the number of U.S. targets that the Soviet’s could lethally attack by forty percent.[8] Furthermore, having missiles within Cuba allowed the Soviets to bypass the U.S. warning radars, especially t he Ballistics Missile Early Warning system, which was stationed in the North Pole.[9] By bypassing the U.S. warning radars, it certainly amplified the risk of a surprise strike upon certain American air bases and important command posts.[10] To address this risk, the U.S. army went from â€Å"Defence Condition Five† (peacetime alert) to â€Å"Defcon 3† (war alert) which further illustrated the high levels of precautions the U.S. government were taking in order to protect itself from an offensive attack from the Soviet.[11] It was quite clear from these precautions that the impending nuclear threat in Cuba threatened the lives of American civilians, troops, and government officials. In the event that the situation escalated out of control, the two world superpowers could have engaged in a third World War that, with nuclear technology had the potential to kill hundreds of millions of civilians and soldiers.[12] Fortunately, the Cuban Mission Crisis never escalated t hisShow MoreRelatedThe Cuban Missile Crisis : A 13 Day Standoff1726 Words   |  7 PagesThe Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13 day standoff in Cuba during the Cold War that struck fear into many American people. Virtual Communities in Purchasing Decisions

Question: Discuss about the Virtual Communities in Purchasing Decisions. Answer: Introduction: Consumer behaviour mainly includes those process and activities that are essentially followed to make different decisions to buy services or goods. Due to this, during the development of the advertisements, advertisers consider consumer behaviour and makes investments to understand the consumer behaviour. This assignment is intended to describe different aspects of the consumer behaviour. The way by which the advertisers utilises the group influences: Users mainly align them against or with various types of groups to which they think as the relevant at their lives. Consumers particularly aspire to buy goods if they observe that buying goods put them into the group to which they want to be included. The main reason behind that is people mainly want to be involved in those groups in which they can find the likely minded people (Nollet and Beaulieu, 2015). For example, a person intends to go to that restaurants or shops where they can get another buyer who is not only the likely minded but also their perception and status is also the same. The main reason behind that is high-class people want to be among the high-class people, or middle-class people want to be among the group of middle-class people. Therefore, the advertiser must advertise these concepts into their advertising. If an advertiser wants to announce a restaurants or shops for the high-class people, then they must mention it somehow during showing advertising to the poten tial customers. Along with that, it is also mandatory to select a proper advertising media so that it can attract the intended target market. Otherwise, it will be very much difficult for the company to attract their target customers. It is seen that there are mainly three different types of reference group influence such as utilitarian influence, informational influence and the value-expressive influence. Through the informational influence, different customers receive information from different professionals who works near the product line and then takes the purchase decision accordingly by comparing it with similar types of goods. On the other hand, by the utilitarian influence, the purchasing of the goods is dependent on the buyer itself (Nollet and Beaulieu, 2015). Therefore, it is mandatory for the marketers to provide extensive and transparent information to customers so that they can be motivated to buy those goods. Along with that, it is also mandatory to express how buying goods and services can increase the image of the customers. This is because; through value-expressed influence, different individuals might feel as well as thinks that purchasing or utilising goods and increase their brand image. Along with that, children also influence their parents to buy different products or services (Leal et al. 2014). For this reason, marketers should influence children via different modes of the marketing channel so that they can change their parents regarding the purchase of the goods or services. It is seen that one parent can affect other parents to make final purchasing decisions. According to the statistics, children spend almost 200 billion dollars annually, whereas they also influence an approximate of 500 billion dollars to purchase different household things. Along with that, the non-wealthy customers also influence wealthy clients. Therefore, marketers must develop their marketing strategy for luxury goods in that way that can distinguish the high-class customers from the non-wealthy customers. Discussion of consumer behaviour: Consumer behaviour is the study of the group, organisations, processes and the individuals that any customer utilises for the selection, utilisation and disposition different services, ideas, products and experiences so that they needs and wants can be satisfied. As stated by Blodgett et al. (2013), organisational buying is one of the processes of decision making by which different formal organisations can establish the need among customers so that they can purchase products as well as services from the company by identifying, evaluating and selecting those products among several alternative suppliers and brands. The consumer buying behaviour is irrational because it does not fit some predictable as well as simple rules that are established by the economists. According to Milliman (2011), irrational behaviour can be described as some behaviour that is out of control, agitated as well as dumb. Consumer buying behaviour is irrational because not all of the human being is consistent with nature and they do not hold the same kind of response as well as perception. Therefore, it is very much difficult to assume the strategy that can motivate all of the customers. This is because; at any point in the decision-making process, variability can be generated and creates irrationality. The main reason behind the irrational behaviour of the consumer is most of the customer do not have the proper knowledge regarding the value of any products or services so that they can compare any product or services with the similar types of goods to buy the best products. Therefore, there is an inevitable uncertainty re garding the brand selection of any customers. However, the organisational buying is rational because there is some strategy that is helpful that can influence any client in particular ways so that they can act in an appropriate ways (Koufaris and Ajit Kambil, 2011). It is seen that if any marketers can convince someone in particular ways so that they can be influenced to take their future decisions regarding purchasing products or services, then it can be said that it is possible to influence the organisational; buying. Therefore, it can be said that organisational buying can be rational. The extent to which marketers should utilise different techniques for encouraging the impulse buying: According to Wood (2012), impulse buying can be defined as the purchasing process without any prior planning as the result of the impulse. In the case of any big business, more than forty percent sales are coming from the impulse buying. Therefore, marketers of any big organisation must encourage the impulse buying because it can highly benefit any company. It has been observed that when any individual planned for the rational buying, then they compare the product or service quality and price of one brand with another. Therefore, there is huge possibility that the customer may not select the particular brand. In most of the cases, rational buying process increases the competition in the market. On the other hand, impulse buying is mainly dependent upon the good mood of any people. If any marketers became successful to grab the good mood of any people, then they may get a huge amount of sales, which is unplanned from the customer's end. Therefore, for facilitating the impulse buying t he only requirement is an emotional attachment with the clients and providing them with some compelling discounts that can motivate customers to buy products or goods without any planning (Phau and Lo, 2014). This is because; here feelings, as well as emotions, play an efficient and decisive role in the decision-making process. For motivating customers to facilitate the impulse buying, marketers, as well as retailers, exploits the impulses by adding it with the basic wants of the customers. For example, a shopper in any supermarket showcase some confectionary items at the checkout places so that it can influence the buyer to trigger the impulse buying. However, impulse buying is not effective in every circumstance, and it is effective in that time when any customer is in a good mood. It is not useful in the time when customers do not have enough money to facilitate impulse buying, so that impulse buying is limited only to the middle-class and high-class people whose monthly disposal income is high (Phau and Lo, 2014). Conclusion: From the above discussion, it is clear that for motivating customers different strategy such as considering group behaviour, impulse buying should be implemented by advertisers is important. This is because; current marketplace becomes very much dynamic and competitive so to achieve competitive advantage effective strategy need to be implemented. Reference list: Blodgett, J. G., Hill, D. With close reference to language examine how fitting a close Act 5 scene II forms to the play Essay Example

With close reference to language examine how fitting a close Act 5 scene II forms to the play Paper In order to show that Act 5 scene ii, is a fitting close to the play Hamlet. I will be looking at how the characters have been brought to a close. I will also be looking at themes and the importance of order being restored in the court at the end of the play. The scene ties up all the relationships that were formed during the course of the play. Hamlet and Horatio, a friendship that we have seen grow and strengthen through the course of the play is broken by Hamlets death. The close connection that Hamlet shared with his mother is separated by their deaths. The unhealthy relationships that were formed, like that of Claudius and Laertes. They become victims of their own trap and are parted from each other. Starting off with the characters, We defy augury. There is special providence in the fall of a sparrow. If it be now, tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now; if it be not now, yet it will come. The readiness is all. There is considerable change in Hamlets character since the last time we saw him, that is before he went on his sea voyage to England. When we first met him in Act 1 scene ii, Hamlet was a lonely character, still mourning his fathers death and very un-happy about his mothers o er-hasty marriage to his uncle Claudius. After the sea voyage to England, Hamlets character is now tranquil, and his tone is more like a Prince. He speaks in detail now to Horatio, of his sea passage to England; he rarely spoke in detail to anyone, most of his conversations to any of the characters consisted of a few vague sentences. He has also come to the conclusion that providence is guiding him and that everything depends on the will of God, as he says Theres a divinity that shapes our ends, Rough-hew them how we will- Hamlets attitude toward destiny has also changed, he will now wait for his chance to do the right thing, that is kill Claudius. He now defies augury because he doesnt want to allow himself to plan his future. This probably explains why he brushes aside the suspicious feelings that he has about the duel he has accepted to play in against Laertes. He now makes it clear that he wanted to be the King of Denmark after his fathers death as he says of Claudius; Poppd in between thelection and my hopes, Thrown out his angle for my proper life {65-66}. Hamlet in this scene seems to recognise death as something that we have to accept in our lives and something that we have to be prepared for; as he says If it be now, tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now; if it be not now, yet it will come. The readiness is all. He has matured emotionally as well, as in Act 3, scene i, 55- 56 he says To be or not to be,. And in Act 5, scene ii, 208 he says Let be. Osrics main function in the play is to invite Hamlet to a fencing match against Laertes. He fulfils this function, but in a very dramatic manner. He is a foppish character, and given to excessive courtesies. His pompousness is very symbolic of the false fai ade that enveloped the English court. The character of Osric represents the corrupted State of Denmark, as Hamlet says to Horatio; he and many more of the same bevy that I know the drossy age dotes on. Shakespeare probably inserted this character into the last scene to give the audience a last glimpse of the corrupted court, before the human canker was destroyed. He allows Hamlet to be witty, and brings him some comic relief after Ophelias death. His language is full of flattery, he calls Hamlet My Lord even as Hamlet insults to his face him calling him a waterfly. The Elizabethans enjoyed word-play or punning on words. Hamlet too enjoyed playing with words, when conversing with members of court, and also his mother and Claudius. Polonius was often a victim of Hamlets word-play. Osric who is seen as a variant of Polonius, too becomes a victim of Hamlets love for punning on words, as we see in Act 5 scene ii, lines 93- 94. Hamlet No, believe me, `tis very cold, the wind is northerly. Osric {taking off his hat } It is indifferent cold, my lord indeed. When Hamlet parodies Osrics style of speech, he collapses and stands confused. Osrics manners reflect the social and cultural manners that were to be observed by courtiers in the presence of royalty. Osric also revels the theme of appearance and reality. He may or may not have realised that he is deaths messenger, as the audience knows that behind the wager of the French rapiers and Arabian horses; lurks, death. He is a foil to the depiction of Yorick through Hamlets fond memories in the first scene of Act 5. The court jester was a genuine fool and Osric is a false fool. The Elizabethans believed that the perfect state for a body is a balance between the for humours. When the humours are unbalanced, the result is that humans are vulnerable to disease. The play also has the themes of blood and judgement, and reason and passion running in the play. The only character in Hamlet to have a balance between blood (passion) and judgement is Horatio. As Hamlet says of him and blest are those Whose blood and judgement are so well commeddled {3. 2. 66-67} Hamlet contrasts Horatios well- balanced temperament with his own rapidly swinging moods. Hamlet respects Horatio for his balanced nature, and it is probably this balance that assures Hamlet that Horatio is someone who can be trusted and whom he can confide in. Act 5 scene ii, brings this close friendship between Hamlet and Horatio to an end. Through out the play we have seen Horatio as one of Hamlets closest friends, unlike Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, he keeps away from the Kings plotting and scheming against Hamlet. Hamlet puts all his trust in him; he was with Hamlet when the ghost of the Old King Hamlet appeared, he helps Hamlet in The Mousetrap by keeping an eye on Claudiuss reaction to the play, Hamlet writes to him informing him of his arrival into Denmark, he is with Hamlet when Osric invites Hamlet to play in the duel against Laertes and Hamlet tells him that he wouldst not think how ill alls here about my heart; and about the uncertainty that he feels about the duel. We see the closeness and belief that Hamlet has in Horatio, when Horatio says hell drink the last of the poisoned wine so that he too may die with Hamlet. Hamlet stops him and says Give me the cup. Let go, by Heaven Ill hat. O God, Horatio, what a wounded name, Things standing thus unknown, shall I leave behind me if thou didst ever hold me in thy heart, Absent thee from felicity awhile, And in this harsh world draw thy breath in pain To tell my story. This is also a fitting end to the play, as Hamlets story will be told Claudius: O yet defend me, friends. I am but hurt. {5. ii. 317} The power that Claudius obtained when he took over the throne of Denmark, has gone to his head by the end of the play. In the quoted line we see that he is trying his hardest to cling on the crown, he doesnt want to let go of the authority and position that he had murdered his brother for. He tells the assembled members of court that he is but hurt. Claudius has caused a lot of disorder in the State. By usurping the throne, he has unbalanced the order of succession to the Throne. By right, on the demise of the Old King Hamlet, his son Hamlet, could take over sovereignty of the State. But by Claudius taking over the throne and marrying his sister-in-law, he has caused the spirit of the Old King to rise out of his grave in order to seek revenge and avenge his murder. Claudiuss hineous act, that is killing his brother in order to be King, and then his plotting and scheming against Hamlet, for example sending him to England to be killed, the duel and the poisoned wine; reflects the social ideas of revenge in the Elizabethan era. No, no, the drink, the drink! O my dear Hamlet! The drink, the drink! I am poisond. One can just hear the agony with which Queen Gertrude cries out her last words to her son. Her warning about the wine shows her true love and concern for Hamlet. Shes always wanted the best for him. For example in Act 5, scene i, when she is scattering flowers into Ophelias grave she says to the dead Ophelia, that she hoped that she would have been Hamlets bride; because she knew how much Hamlet adored Ophelia, and that his behaviour towards her changed after his fathers death and his mothers o er-hasty marriage. During the duel she asks him to wipe the sweat off his face, she drinks to his fortune, and then warns him not to drink the wine, so that he may not have the same fate as her. The theme of appearance and reality which appears though out the play also comes to a close in this scene. The mask of being a good King, that Claudius wears around is ripped apart by Hamlet in this scene. We see the real Claudius, who is a villain, villain, smiling, damned villain! {1. v. 106}. His true nature is exposed to the whole court when Hamlet kills him in the hall. In Act 4 scene vii, the King proposes a fencing match between Hamlet and Laertes. Claudius does this in order to protect himself from the rebellious Laertes. He uses Laertes s anger toward Hamlet, to his advantage. He tells Laertes that the foil that he will use will be unbated or unblunt. The messenger they will use to invite Hamlet to play in the match will be one who will praise Laertes s excellence. Claudius has to do this to make Laertes appear as the stronger player, when he knows that Hamlet is the stronger and better fencer. He appears to be supporting Hamlet by betting that Hamlet will win, when in reality he is actually plotting Hamlets death. The duel which Hamlet has been asked to play in against Laertes appears to be a friendly match. But behind the wager of French rapiers and Arabian horses, lurks, death. But we the audience know that there is poison and the intended outcome is Hamlets death. Duels in Shakespeares time were fought for the sake of honour. Fencing in Shakespeares time was a form of sporting entertainment and was also used to settle disputes. Fencing matches soon became socializing events. The pearl that the King will throw into the flagon of wine and drink from or rather make Hamlet drink from when Hamlet give the first or second hit, Or quit in answer of the third exchange, {5. vii. 253-254}. Here again he is using an extravagant gesture to hide the fact that he will be putting poison in the flagon of wine. The Elizabethan culture consisted of a lot of noisy displays, and hence Claudius orders that the cannons be fired for every hit made by Hamlet. Ill be your foil, Laertes. {5. vii. 240} Hamlet is saying that hell appear to be the weaker player, so that in his obliviousness, Laertes s skill will shine like a jewel; as the word foil means background to show off a jewel. Before the duel begins, Hamlet asks for Laertes pardon for his behavior at Ophelias funeral. Laertes appears to accept his love, but when presented with the foils he pick up the Unbated and envenomd foil. By Hamlets antic disposition coming to an end, th rough his death; the theme of appearance and reality comes to an end. Hamlet is a revenge tragedy. But isnt like the traditional revenge tragedies, where the protagonist was driven by vengeance. In contrast Hamlet delays taking revenge on Claudius while he was praying, thinking his soul would go to heaven instead of being damned for eternity. The traditional revenge tragedies ended with a corpse strewn stage, and a hero coming to restore order to the disrupted State, which is parallel to what happens at the end of the play Hamlet. Seneca published a lot of tragedies, and he had a very strong impact on Shakespeare. Some of the features of Senecan drama can be found in Hamlet; example appearance of a ghost calling for revenge, displays of violence that resulted in a corpse strewn stage. A revenge tragedy has to have some element of victory in it. Death, Hamlet and Fortinbras stand triumphant in the end of the play. There is a lot of talk of death in the play. Claudius killing the Old King Hamlet, Hamlet killing Polonius. Claudiuss plot to have Hamlet killed, Hamlets letters to have Rosencrantz and Guildenstern killed upon arrival in England instead of himself, Ophelias supposed suicidal death. The Queen drinking the poisoned wine, the King being killed by Hamlet with the poison that has killed his father, mother, and which will also take him away from this world. Laertes and Hamlets death due to a wound each of them received from the envenomd sword. Hence we see that death scores victory as Fortinbras says O proud Death, What feast is toward in thine eternal cell, That thou so many princes at a shot So bloodily has struck? {5. ii. 357-360} Hamlet is victorious because he has avenged his fathers death by killing Claudius. He has his dying wishes fulfilled, that is for his story to be told and for Fortinbras to take over the Danish throne. But most of all it is Fortinbras who is most triumphant. In Act 1 scene i, we are told that he wanted to recapture whatever land his father had lost to King Hamlet. Now in Act 5 scene ii, we see him returning victorious from Poland, and upon arrival in Denmark, he is presented with Denmarks Sovereignty as per Hamlets dying wishes. Order played a very important role in the Elizabethan world. They that the stability of a country depended on the stability, and strength of the Government heading it. Hence if the Government was corrupted the rest of the State would get corrupted as well, as we see happen in Hamlet. Claudius was driven by the desire for power, and authority over Denmarks Sovereignty that he would do anything to it. Even if it meant killing his own brother, and causing the break-up of families and the deaths of innocent people in the process. The Elizabethan audience would have been very disturbed with the appearance of the ghost in Act 1 scene I, as Marcellus says in Act 1 scene iv Something is rotten in the State of Denmark. And to restore their frame of mind, Fortinbras is reintroduced into the play, at this stage to restore order in the troubled State of Denmark. The anxieties that we see in Hamlet, that is who should be ruling Denmark now that the old monarch, King Hamlet is dead; reflect the situation that England was in, near the time when Hamlet was first performed. Claudiuss assassination of Hamlet, would have brought to mind the things that the audience would have heard about the threats to Elizabeths life. Act 5 scene ii, is a fitting close to the play Hamlet. The scene brings to an end all the corruption that Denmark was steeped in. All the characters who aided then human canker example Polonius, Ophelia, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and Laertes; and the victims of Claudiuss deviousness, Hamlet ,the Queen Gertrude and Claudius himself are dead. These characters meet their end either through carnal, bloody, and unnatural acts, accidental judgements, casual slaughters or Of deaths put on by cunning and forcd cause. When Hamlet puts Denmark in the hands of Fortinbras and dies on the throne, he is bringing an end to all the corruption that Denmark suffered during Claudiuss reign. Hence we see that Act 5 scene ii, is a fitting close to the play Hamlet because, all the relationships, corruption and plotting that had begun in the beginning of the play has come to a halt, and has ended. We are given a last insight into the characters of Claudius and Gertrude, in their dying lines. O my dear Hamlet! The drink, the drink! I am poisond. We see her love for her son Hamlet. And her loyalty toward Claudius, even while on her death bed she wont give away his secret; that he has poisoned the wine to kill Hamlet. O yet defend me, friends. I am but hurt. Very characteristic of Claudius, who was possessive of the power and authority he had gained by killing his brother. He is so possessive of the power and authority that he is not willing to give it up, even when he is dying. The most important element that makes this scene a fitting close to the play is the restoration of order into the troubled state of Denmark. In his dying speech Hamlet hands over Denmarks Sovereignty to Fortinbras. This would have put the Elizabethan audiences mind at rest, as they strongly believed in order; and considered it extremely essential in the running of a country.

Adcock Analysis Analysis Essay Example

Adcock Analysis Analysis Paper We have all felt insecure about our appearance. No matter how much one denies it, it is inevitable that in a world where appearance seems to mean everything, everyone at some point or another has experienced insecurity and diffidence towards their body image. In arguably her most famous piece of poetry, Fleur Adcock addresses her own personal experience with the standards of beauty in ‘Weathering’. Here, she employs her distinctive poetic methods of provocative openings, strong critical tone, naturalistic imagery, enticing figurative and strictly conventional structures in order to intertwine her most recurring thematic concerns of nature, anti-romanticism and place. In typically provocative Adcock style (as seen in ‘A Way Out’ with â€Å"The other options to become a bird†), ‘Weathering’ commences with the thought provoking lines â€Å"Literally thin skinned, I suppose, my face/ catches the wind off the snow line and flushes/ with a flush that will never wholly settle†. Readers are immediately captivated by her affirmation of psychological strength despite physical weakness in her first three words. She confidently states the thin condition of her skin while ardent to avoid any misconceptions through the figurative clichà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ of being â€Å"thin skinned† that indicates emotional weakness. Additionally arresting is the naturalistic imagery of â€Å"the wind off the snowline and flushes with a flush that will never wholly settle† which also stimulates immediate attention in showing her gracious acceptance of the natural process of aging that the wind has caused. Her use of the â€Å"win d† is potentially a strikingly symbolic reference to aging being an uncontrollable force like the wind, or a literal reference to the physical effect of wind on the skin. It is this unique purpose of ‘Weathering’ which furthermore intrigues one to pursue reading the poem. Adcock Essay Sample Fleur Adcock Poetry – Weathering Analysis Fleur Adcock Poetry – Weathering Analysis Fleur Adcock Poetry – Weathering Analysis The pressure concerning beauty and appearance is immense, where throughout history there has always been a specific standard for everyone to be measured and rated against, from Marilyn Monroe in the 50s to today where being thin is actively encouraged by the media. To show her defiance of these standards, Adcock writes â€Å"Well: /that was a metropolitan vanity,/wanting to look young for ever, to pass.†, using the caesuraic â€Å":† and line differentiation to vividly distinguish her acceptance of aging, from the metropolitan vanity which permeates the mentality of western cultures, especially in women. Adcock extends her strong criticism to the next stanza, with â€Å"I was never a Pre Raphaelite beauty/nor anything but pretty enough to satisfy/men who need to seen with passable women.† Her tone is strikingly bitter, which like many of her anti-romantic poems derives from her abusive and negative relationships with men. Despite her ‘reputation as an anti-romantic’ as noted by critic Richard King, Weathering then takes a great transition in tone with â€Å"But now I am in love with a place/which doesn’t care how I look, or if I’m happy†. In contrast to her notably negative treatment of place as the ‘expatriate poet’ in her poetry like in ‘Unexpected Visit, Adcock expresses with a juxtaposing tone of happiness that she has found fulfilment in a place, most likely to be the Lake District of England which was where the poem was written. Readers may respond positively to such a revelation, feminist perspectives in particular fa vouring her expressed independence from men. However responses may also be sympathetic of Adcock, with how it seems she will never know what it feels like to be truly in love with another person. When describing the ‘weathering’ of her body that she is proudly content with, Adcock illustrates in the third stanza â€Å"My hair will turn grey in case,/my nails chip and flake, my waist thicken, and the years work all their usual changes. If my face is to be weather beaten as well†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . Her imagery here is strikingly naturalistic and similar to the weathering of a rock – perhaps a further criticism on the objectification of women by men â€Å"who need to be seen with passable women.† Another possible intention for the imagery is Adcock’s desire to depersonify herself to an environmental object, in order to become a part of the place that she loves and that apparently loves her. In the last stanza, Adcock leaves readers with further beautifully phrased and toned diction of â€Å"†¦that’s little enough lost, a fair bargain/, for a year among lakes and falls, when simply to look out of my window at the high pass/makes me indifferent to mirrors and to what my soul may wear over its new complexion†. Though the language here is beautiful, especially the personification of the soul which ironic to the subject matter has an appearance, this does not compare to the great beauty of Adcock’s message where she encourages indifference to mirrors, and therefore perceived flaws and faults and promotes a peaceful outlook on ones self. In her critical review of the poem, poetry critic Katy Paul-Chowdhury notes that Adcock â€Å"embraces the signs of age in her face and body with deep compassion and wisdom, and yes, indifference – that it inspires us to do likewise.† Readers will inevitably agree with such a review, where it seems that ‘Weathering’ is Adcock’s most referenced and famous poem because it is her most inspirational. Supporting the idea that the poem intends to inspire, is how she employs a strictly conventional stanzaic form, and ‘accessible, declarative diction comes from a conscious wish to avoid taking advantage of the reader’ as noted by the Oxford Companion, which makes the message more available to a wider range of audiences and therefore more powerful. It must also be appreciated that although she uses her characteristic methods of provocative openings, strong critical tone, naturalistic imagery, enticing figurative and strictly conventional structur es in order to intertwine her most recurring thematic concerns of nature, anti-romanticism and place; ‘Weathering’ is anything but characteristic of her in being a piece of great inspiration.

The Beast in Revelation Chapter 13 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

The Beast in Revelation Chapter 13 - Essay Example The beast was given ability to use his power for 42 months, and given power to make war with the righteous and to overcome them (verse 7) ( Merrill pg 258). John saw blasphemous names on the head of the beast rising from the sea. The beast symbolizes the Roman Empire. The Roman emperors were named sebastos, which referred them as spiritual, also, the savior of the world and the Lord. Such titles were meant for only God for he was the only holy and spiritual and holy Jesus is the savior of the world, and that is how blasphemous the names were. Thus, the blasphemous names on the head of the beast clearly show his trial to claim for him the power and glory that belong to God alone. The Roman Empire took itself as the savior. Meanwhile, it was unjust in its ruling and it persecuted Christians and the church. In these ways, it indicated itself as the beast of the book of revelation 13 (Merrill C. Tenney pg 347). However, the power that was pushing the throne of the Roman Empire was the devil also the dragon (revelation 12:8-9).The image of the dragon was the beast, and they have close similarity for they have seven heads and ten horns (13;1).In addition, the beast duplicates the devil by nature. His origin and appearance is a further indication of the evil that is controversial against God and man. The Satan is the mentor of the beast, which gives power, authority and might to him. The dragon is behind the monster from the sea and is accountable for leading the world to sin. Therefore, the beast from the sea is clearly seen as the dragon’s agent on earth. Furthermore, the beast is seen as a military, political, economic and social dominator of the world (revelation 13:5-8).In the book of revelation, the waters symbolize people under the rule of the sea beast, so the beast rose from the human population. One of the beast’s head was deeply wounded. The wound was mortal and it

Sociology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 4

Sociology - Essay Example Humans acquire of their behavioural traits from nurture thus come a philosophy called tabula rasa or blank slate. In recent years, both nature and nurture have been recognized to play interacting roles in development. These two are tied in mutually in ways that many of us do not see. Both are important influences to a person as they are developing their traits. What we have inherited is essential basis of what kind of person we are, but our environment can alter and develop us even more. In acquiring or altering traits in a person, these two factors are important. Some psychologists agree that nature and nurture are both major influences to the development of behaviour. Psychologist Robert Plomin said, "†¦. But the genetic influence on traits and behaviors is only partial: Genetics account, on average, for half of the variance of most traits. That means the environment accounts for the rest." Though we receive genes from our family, our surroundings and nurturing can alter that if strong enough, as an influence. We might not notice it, but  nature  and  nurture  are mixed in with each other, influencing traits of everyone. 2. What are the common themes in the ideas of Freud, Piaget, Kohlberg, Gilligan, Mead and Erickson? In what ways do their theories differ? The common theme in the idea of the Freud, Piaget, Kohlberg, Gilligan, Mead and Erickson is child development. They all believed that society played a vital role in the development of the person. However, they all developed variety of concepts in the psychoanalytic point of view. Sigmund Freud developed the elements of personality. He declared humans had two basic needs or drives:  eros, a need for bonding and  thanatos, which related to a drive for death. Freud's perspective combined both these basic needs and the influence of society into a unique model of personality. Freud’s work highlights the internalization of social norms and the importance of childhood experiences in the so cialization process and the development of personality. Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development centred on human cognition or how people think and understand. He identified four major stages of cognitive development: sensory motor stage, post-industrial societies, concrete operational stage, and the formal operational stage. Lawrence Kohlberg developed a theory of moral development. He used Piaget’s theory as a facilitator for a study of moral reasoning. He suggested three stages: preconventional stage  based on pain and pleasure, a  conventional stage  (in the teenage years), where right and wrong is understood within cultural norms, and a  postconventional stage, where abstract critique of the social order is possible. However, his work is gender limited to boys only. Carol Gilligan in response to Kohlberg’s theory developed the theory of gender and moral development. She concludes that males and females make moral judgments in different ways. Ma les use a  justice perspective:  "It's wrong if the rules define it that way". Females use a  care and responsibility perspective:  "It's wrong if it damages relationships." Her recent research on self-esteem demonstrates that female self-esteem begins to slip during adolescence as they encounter more authority figures who are men. George Mead developed the theory of social self. Mead's analysis focuses on mental processes and is often referred to as  social behaviourism. He emphasized that the key to developing the

The inclusion of WTO in the corporate world has revolutionized the situation and competition seeks its unabated boost everywhere. The countries and their companies have entered the international markets in the 21st century along with their magnificent products encompassing individual, collective, domestic, commercial and industrial needs at the global level. The dynamics of international strategy motivate the international companies to alter their strategies according to the changes taking place rapidly around them within the framework of the business environment. Remaining updated with the fast changing world and adopt immediate policy accordingly is key to success for a company under the present state of perfect competition. The strategies of the multinational companies are far more vivid and colossal than those of local and domestic ones. Multinational companies or enterprises refer to the "organizations consisting o f a parent company in a home country that owns relatively autonomous subsidiaries in various host countries. In every organization, many staffs they believe the theory help them become better on their jobs and more successful in their life. Although this may lead them having to sacrifice some of their main beliefs in order to succeed. One example of organizational theory in the financial sector would be an employee or manager who wants to know how to achieve goals by having a set structure to follow. In addition someone in a human resources sector will have to make decisions throughout their working day that will definitely change the structure and practice of a working day for all other staff in the company. http://management.blurtit.com/q7346416.html Different approaches to management used by the Vodafone and Lanka Bell. Professor Elton Mayos (1880-1949) research, human interaction or group relationships effects the productivity and it increase the motivation of the employees. So as far as this approach concerns Vodafone allows more human interaction as they practice little bit of team approach within the company, also their department have coordination. However, Lanka Bell human interact is limit to some extent as they have divided into separate division. Each division will work separately to achieve its target, more often divisions may deviate from the organizational goals as they work as separate divisions. System Approach Section:2 Different Leadership styles in Vodafone and lanka bell Assumption Its an assumption that Vodafone is using democratic leadership and Lanka Bell is used in Autocratic leadership style. Democratic Leadership According to Vodafone Companys information it shows that the company is following democratic leadership style. In democratic leadership style manager will never take a decision without consulting to subordinates. This means that employees get a chance to express their ideas to the management level. Democratic leader ship also helps employees to share their ideas among the team. While team member will feel good in the working environment, as they will also looking benefits this leader ship style also can lead for better ideas and knowledge. Leads to higher productivity among group members. Autocratic leadership style The leadership style used in Lanka Bell is Autocratic and this not a modern style. As autocratic style manager retains more power as well as decision making authority. In this style staffs they do not have their role in decision making and they are not allowed to give input. So this style is not good for work as a team. And this is one of the best leadership style that can use in situation where control is necessary. Section:2 Significant technological breakthrough has taken place last week that affects both Vodafone and Lanka Bell and also the industry as a whole. Discuss the impact that different leadership style may have on motivation of employees of Vodafone and Lanka Bell in this circumstance. This is an assumption that 3D mobile phone has been introduced. Last week apple has been introduced Glasses-free 3D I phone to the market. And this is the first 3D mobile phone that could use without glasses. So many of the mobile service provider in the world are planning to upgrade their network for the new technology, includes Vodafone and Lanka Bell. Vodafone Company As the Vodafone Company they are using democratic leadership, so their staffs are having wide participation in decision making and it is not a difficult for the management of Vodafone to get new idea from the staffs. As a result of democratic leadership style: It increase staffs motivation and commitment to the decision made It helps employees strengthen their professional development by participating in dialogues. And also it helps to improve job satisfaction. By having group discussions which can offer useful ideas. And management put trust in employees and they encourage them to make decisions. So it will be easy to motivate staffs through democratic style. http://www.skills2lead.com/democratic-leadership-style.html Lanka Bell Company As the Lanka Bell Company, they are using autocratic leadership style. So its not easy to motivate their staffs as compare the democratic style. Because Company decisions are taking by management level and there are no involvements of company staffs. In autocratic leadership style: In autocratic leadership, staffs participation is limited in most aspects of work. And also they have no particular responsibilities so it will be difficult to motivate Lanka Bell staffs in breakthroughs like this. Staffs that working middle management and lower management should follow the decisions taking by manager or Ceo. One of the main features of autocratic style is Managers or senior staffs do not trust staffs, and simply they give orders that they expected to be obey. So staffs feel that they do not have independent working environment. Because of this management faces difficulties to motivate the staffs. Section-3 Apply different motivational theories within the workplace of Lanka Bell and compare them Maslows Hierarchy of Needs As Maslows theory every human must need five basic needs, it include; physiological needs, safety need, love or social needs, esteem needs and self- actualization. If Maslows theory applies in Lanka Bells lower level workers could be motivated by having them their basic needs such as; salary. If the company offers good salary workers would show their maximum. And also its very important to provide security like insurance and retirement benefits. To motivate workers there are some other factors that can affect social needs, status needs and self-fulfillment needs. Frederick Herzbergs Two factors theory Frederick Herzbergs theory is depends on main two factors, that is Motivational factors (need for personal growth) and Hygiene factors (need to avoid unpleasantness). As Lanka Bell they have applied motivational factors as that their employees by having challenging tasks and by recognizing staffs achievements. And also by having good salary and providing very well working environment. Comparison of two theories As Maslows theory it is based on the hierarchy of human needs and identified five (physiological needs, safety need, love or social needs, esteem needs and self- actualization) priority basis and their satisfaction in motivating employees. When Was Barbie Given Bendable Legs

Hatfield 1 Kristin Hatfield Professor Clark English 101 3037 Page 175 Assignment 4 Paper 5 October 31, 2012 Barbie – An American Icon Icons like Barbie recognized for their popularity and effects on society. Barbie is a subject of obsession all over the world. Collectors, consumers and even some designers become enthralled in the Barbie world. Designers create special designs to fit a specific trend of the high fashion runways. Collectors all over the world collect and spend amazing amounts of money to have the original Barbie in their collection. The consumers have made Barbie a true icon in American culture. The Barbie doll was invented in 1959 by Ruth Handler (co-founder of Mattel), whose own daughter was called Barbara. The Barbie doll was introduced to the world at the American Toy Fair in New York City. Barbie's job was teenage fashion doll. In 1965, Barbie first had bendable legs, and eyes that open and shut. In 1967, a Twist ‘N Turn Barbie was released that had a moveable body that twisted at the waist. The best-selling Barbie doll ever was 1992 Totally Hair Barbie, with hair from the top of her head to her toes. The first Barbie was sold for $3. Additional clothing based on the latest runway trends from Paris were sold, costing from $1 to $5. In the first year (1959), 300,000 Barbie dolls were sold. Today, a mint condition â€Å"#1† (1959 Barbie doll) can fetch as much as $27,450. To date, over 70 fashion designers have made clothes for Mattel, using over 105 million yards of fabric. Barbie has had a huge impact on the fashion industry for over fifty years. . (Mary Bellis, About. com Guide) Hatfield 2 This is what the proportions of a life-size Barbie doll would look likeImage from (thefrisky. com) There has been some controversy over Barbie Doll's figure when it was realized that if Barbie was a real person her measurements would be an impossible 36-18-38. Barbie's â€Å"real† measurements are 5 inches (bust), 3 ? inches (wais t), 5 3/16 inches (hips). Her weight is 7 ? ounces, and her height is 11. 5 inches tall. These measurements seem unattainable to me as a woman living in a world of super-sized portions of food at every corner. Nevertheless, Mattel has also responded to concerns about Barbie’s body.In 1997 Barbie’s body mold was redesigned and given a wider waist, which would make her â€Å"better suited to contemporary fashion designs. †(The Examiner. com) I can clearly remember my first Barbie. I was five years old. It was Christmas day and I was very excited to own my very own Barbie. Along with the doll I also received a dream house, a pink corvette, swimming pool, and even a Ken doll to make the â€Å"Barbie world† complete. I was instantly obsessed with the idea and the make believe life I imagined for my dolls. Not once did I ever think of these dolls as role models or as having a certain body image that I must follow n order to be accepted in society.Unfortunately, a lot of mothers and women believe that the doll has made young women obsessive about their size and looks. Hatfield 3 Overall, this American Icon has influenced our culture in a way Mattel probably never could have ever imagined. Barbie is a doll that creates and follows fashion trends just as the world does. This iconic doll has changed her clothing, hairstyles, automobiles, friends, houses and pets. Barbie is one doll that never goes out of style and has made fashion dolls a great pastime for collectors and children young and old.

Early to Middle Childhood Essay

If you ever seen a preschooler rushing off to play with a neighborhood friend, you know the enjoyment that children derive from being with their peers. Aside from this enjoyment, peer relationship is significant to a child’s social development. At the beginning of early childhood up to the middle childhood, children become less dependent on their parents. At the age of 2, children play independently with their toys but later in this period, children will tend to play with interaction. This change in the mode of playing of children will be formalized in the start of school age. Other than enjoyment, play becomes a material for social improvements. It allows children to be more competent in their social interactions with others and serves as a way to develop self-control. They avoid hitting an opponent who outlasted them and they tend to develop control of emotions (Selman et al. , 1983; Feldman, 1982). Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development The theory of psychologist Jean Piaget is the most well known of all the theories in cognitive development. He suggested two stages during early childhood and middle childhood. The movement from one stage to another requires a proper amount of maturation and experiences. Preoperational Stage (2 to 7 years) The use of language is the major development during the preoperational stage. In this stage, children develop their sense of representation of the world that allows them to describe people, events, and feelings. They even use symbols in play to represent a particular object. For example, a book that was pushed across the floor is a car for them. Concrete Operational Stage (7 to 12 years) The mastery of the concept of conservation marked the beginning of the concrete operation stage. During this stage, children develop their ability to think in a more logical manner. The egocentrism characteristic of the preoperational period is slowly disappearing in this stage. One of the things that the children learn at this stage is the principle of reversibility, the idea that some changes can be undone by reversing the earlier action that result to the change. Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development In trying to trace the course of social development, Eric Erikson developed the most comprehensive theory of social development. He included two stages during childhood which include the initiative versus guilt stage and the industry versus inferiority stage. Initiative versus Guilt Stage (age 3 to 6) In this stage, the major conflict is the desire of a child to initiate an activity independently but feeling the guilt that bring by the consequences of such activity. Parents take a big part in helping their child to adapt with this stage. They should react positively and take time to resolve problems under this stage. Industry versus Inferiority Stage (age 6-12) During this period, successful psychosocial development is featured by increasing competency across all tasks, may it be social interactions or academic skills. Intelligence Intelligence can take on many different meanings. A person who reason logically and identify more solutions in a problem is considered intelligent. Another is verbal abilities which are also attributed as being intelligent. Intelligence in a more focused meaning is the capacity to understand the world, think critically and rationally and use resources in an effective manner when face with challenges. The first formal intelligent test was performed by Alfred Binet. He used this test to identify the dullest student in Paris school system in order to provide them with corrective assistance. However, theories of intelligence began to unravel the mysteries of our intellect. One of the first theory in intelligence assumed that there was a single factor contributing to mental ability, called the g-factor (Spearman, 1927). Consequently, psychologist L. L. Thurstone suggested that there are several primary mental abilities underlying general intelligence. By using innovative statistical technique, he classified a variety of subcomponents of intelligence which includes numerical ability, reasoning, verbal fluency, memory and verbal comprehension. Other than that, Howard Gardner proposed an idea that we have seven multiple intelligence. In these seven multiple intelligence, musical intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic, linguistic, and interpersonal intelligence can be seen during childhood years. Gender Identity Our society holds well-defined stereotypes about men and women, and they prevail regardless of age, economic status, and social and educational background. Although the difference in many studies about men and women may conclude large difference, still it is not the reality. In considering the differences that were documented, it can be seen that there are more similarity than difference between men and women. One of the most known differences between men and women is their degree of aggression. By the time they are 2 years old, boys tend to show more aggression than girls and this continues throughout their lifespan. Furthermore, during the middle childhood, children are quite different in the level of self-esteem. Girls, on the average, have lower self-esteem compared to boys. References Feldman, R. S. (1982). Alternative Tempest Essays - English-language Films, Fozzy

Alternative Tempest Essays - English-language Films, Fozzy Alternative Tempest The Alternative Tempest The play opens with a group of drunken Muppets from Italy, Gonzo, a blue monster thing with a bent nose, the King of Naples, Kermit a green frog with massive eyes, sailing home after the marriage of his daughter to the King of Tunis. They were drunk because they had previously been over to France on a 'booze cruise' in search of the duty frees. During the voyage the weather suddenly got a lot worse but nobody noticed because they were soused out of their tiny minds, apart from this weird bloke with a really tiny head that nobody know his name. He hangs around with a pink elephant, or so they thought! The ship tips from side to side and the puppets, oops I mean people on board don't jump off, they fall off and somehow float to shore. From this point onward, all the action occurs on the island. In the second scene, we meet Fozzy Bear, the former Duke of Milan. Fozzy explains to his daughter, Miss Piggy, how he was constantly high on 'Junior Disprol' and cheap orangeade and so he lost his Dukedom twelve years previous. His brother, the Swedish Chef who had received financial help from King Gonzo, had overthrown him. Meanwhile, Dr Bunsen Honeydew, (a genius scientist with a head that looks exactly like a big, green melon) had ordered an old nobleman to, Rowlf (a big dog with a passion for playing on his saxophone) to abandon Fozzy Bear and his young daughter out at sea in a leaky boat. Rowlf however was feeling sorry for them and provided food, drink and a bit of totty on the side to keep them busy. On shore Fozzy and Miss Piggy had found one other inhabitant, his name was Animal, a demented red furred monster that seemed to take a fancy to Miss Piggy. At first Fozzy liked Animal and decided to educate him until he tried 'it on' with her and Fozzy had no choice but to give him a damn good kicking. Fozzy Bear had also found a rat-like creature that said he was a spirit but had been imprisoned in a tree. Fozzy had to set him free by swinging Animal around his head and smashing him onto the tree, thus destroying it. Rizzo the Rat had to promise to obey his commands as a condition of letting him out, otherwise he would let Animal eat him. Still under Fozzy's commands Rizzo lures Dr Honeydew's son, Clifford, away from the rest of the group and towards Fozzy's cell but when Clifford lays eyes on Miss Piggy he thought WellI haven't had 'any' for a while now and she's not too bad. She fell in love with him but only because she had never seen a man her own age before. Fozzy's match-making plan was working and to get them even more together he decided to put difficulties in their way, as he knew that his daughter would do the opposite of anything her father tells her to do. Accordingly, in spite of Miss Piggy's pleas for mercy Clifford is apprehended as a prisoner and condemned to give Animal piggyback rides round the island to stop him pestering Fozzy's daughter. In the meantime, Dr Honeydew reckons that his son has been in an accident involving whipped cream and a hamster and is filled with grief. Rowlf tries to comfort the doctor but is irritated by what he regards as false optimism. Their search for Clifford has tired them out and they are forced to lie down and rest. While they are asleep, the Swedish Chef, the current Duke of Milan, suggests to Sam the Eagle (he was called that because, well he was a bird), that they kill Doc Honeydew and seize his throne. Rizzo the Rat, however, has heard their plotting and wakes up Rowlf in time. The Swedish Chef and Sam the Eagle claim that they drew their Uzis to protect the sleeping party from wild animals. Their story is believed and the royal party moves on to continue the search for Clifford. Andy and Randy Pig, the Jester and the butler give Animal some cheap booze from France and he

Massacre at Mystic Essays

Massacre at Mystic Essays Massacre at Mystic Paper Massacre at Mystic Paper Day 1: Massacre at Mystic The first day took place on May 26th, 1637 in a Pequot village at Missituck (located near the Mystic River in Connecticut). What happened was the English and Indian allies had attacked the Pequot village. Within that group, there were 70 English, 70 Mohegans, and 500 Narragansetts. The Mohegans and the Narragan were the allies of the English. The English were Puritans from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, led by Major John Mason and Captain John Underhill. The massacre was the first time the English had been involved in the killings of Native Americans. The purpose of the Puritans migrating to America was to start a new life and for religious freedom from England. The Pequot village was the wealthiest, largest, and powerful tribe of Connecticut. The Pequots were also dominant in military and political force. Part of the Massacre at Mystic started when two â€Å"Block Islanders,† who were thought to be Pequot but were really a subtribe of the Narragansett, pretended to seek trade with John Oldham. Once they were aboard his ship, they killed him and stole all of his goods. Along with the murder of Oldham, the murder of John Underhill also led to John Endicott seeking revenge on the Pequots. The Puritans officially declared when the Pequot started killing colonists, capturing women, slaughtering livestock, and burning storehouses from the English Population. The battle lasted less than an hour. The English captured whoever they could find and beheaded them and tortured them, among with other things. One 160 men went looking for Sassacus, who was traveling with 400 followers. Once they finally found him, the English tried to negotiate the release of 200 women and children, but he slipped away. He later had his head cut off from trying to get help from the Mohawk, who were Sassacus’ old enemies, and they sent it to the English as a token of friendship. The war officially ended in September 1638 when tribal leaders that were left signed the Treaty of Hartford. This treaty revoked legal recognition of the Pequot nation.

Does Welfare Reform in New York City Work Essay

Does Welfare Reform in New York City Work - Essay Example It stretched from accommodating few natives to a large influx of immigrants from Latin America and other parts of the world. The city had not come up with a long term strategy to include all these new members. So the welfare system was overburdened and after some years (forty years), it started becoming inefficient. In the nineties, employees working for the welfare system in the City felt unsafe and started reinforcing their offices to protect themselves. Clients on welfare had to waste most of their day waiting for welfare workers who could not even deliver upon meeting the clients. Client files started getting lost; welfare workers did not complete cases and kept jumping from client to client so there was no case of continuity. This made most clients angry and they vented out their frustrations on social workers forcing security guards to intervene. This meant that people on welfare could not make time for other productive activities because they spent most of their time trying to chase for benefits and looking for child care. 'Mass confusion' are the perhaps the most appropriate words to use when describing the city's welfare prior to 1995. The New York welfare system underwent a rapid change between 1995 and 2001 or we could say that reforms were introduced. These reforms occurred during Rudolph Giuliani's term as New York mayor. Some of the changes that the welfare system saw were the decline in number of people on welfare; from one point one million to about six hundred. The welfare system's method of approach also changed. Instead of giving checks to clients, they were given jobs; it became employment based instead of issuing handouts. However, there is another side to this reform. Jobs were not just dished out from all directions. Welfare clients had to prove that they were compliant. This implied that the so called 'difficult clients' were not considered this included drug addicts and the like. Besides, this there were problems in system management and all these will be looked at in the subsequent sections in detail. Welfare reforms were not 'the knight on a white horse' for the residents of the City of New York. (Mead, 1992) 2.0 Literature review There are a number of changes that were observed during Giuliani's regime. There is no doubt that the general approach was work oriented. From the 1995 to 1999, most of the policies imposed sanctions and mainly dealt with work requirements. Clients were required to meet a certain criteria and if they were did not comply, then they were met by sanctions. During this time, New York saw the rejection of about a large number of adults. Cases of sanctioning increased from eight percent to fourteen percent. Besides these, the system was characterized by compulsory workfare jobs. This implied that there were a number of adults that were involved in work experience program jobs. These were more of assignments than actual jobs. However in the last years of Giuliani's regime (99-01) emphasis on workfare started diminishing and some emphasis was now being placed on training for jobs. This involved the three plus two model. Welfare adults were required to attend three days of workfare and they were also supposed to dedicate the remaining two days of the week to a training program such as education or job readiness service. There were also a number of programs that focused on special groups.

Courtly Love Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Courtly Love - Research Paper Example Christianity advocated for real love between two individuals of opposite sex who eventually ended up marrying and establishing a family together, while prohibiting any form of love, passion or desire by the married couples outside of their marriage. On the other hand, the concept of Courtly Love introduced a completely different perception of love, requiring that married ladies could still develop passion and have romance outside of their marriage, as long as they did not violate the rules of chastity and infidelity (Donaldson, 16). The fundamental principle of Courtly Love was that marriages were arranged, and had nothing to do with love, as long as such marriages brought wealth and power, as well as other material benefits to the participants and their families. Nevertheless, while the Courtly Love was a noble idea meant to allow married people, especially ladies to experience love and romance that they did not get out of their marriages which were not based on love, it eventually resulted into illicit and tragic love affairs that did not follow the laid down rules, as exemplified by William Shakespeare’s â€Å"Romeo and Juliet†. ... Most of such ladies were engaged in marriages for the convenience of their families in protecting their material wealth and power, as opposed to marrying out of love, thus living in marriages that had no happiness and where intimacy and romance did not fully exist, because the marriage partners did not have strong feelings for each other (Capellanus, 44). It is through the rise of the concept of Courtly Love, that such ladies were allowed to develop passion for the knights and courtiers who served within the kingly courts, given a leeway by the rule that marriage did not stop them from loving again and engaging in passionate romance with the knights and the courtiers, as long as they adhered to the rules of maintaining chastity and avoiding infidelity (Boase, 31). Nevertheless, with the leeway to engage in passionate romance and to love the knights and the courtiers, it was inevitable for such romances to develop into real feelings of love and lust for sexual engagements, which event ually saw such ladies engage in illicit love affairs with the knights and courtiers, thus breaking the rules of fidelity and chastity, and eventually ending up in tragedies (Jackson, 243). William Shakespeare’s â€Å"Romeo and Juliet† is one of the love literatures that were inspired b the concept of Courtly Love, which depicts the love triangle involving the ruling house and other revered families fighting for the love of 13-year old Juliet (Shakespeare, 23). The literature is motivated by the arranged marriage concept of the middle ages, where Count Paris, who is a member of the ruling family, seeks to marry Juliet out of an agreement reached

The Lady or The Tiger Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The Lady or The Tiger - Essay Example During the trial, the lover looked closely for any signs from the Princess, who was seated at the King’s right hand. This essay therefore explores the possible course of action of the Princess’ lover selecting one door over the other. One’s personal contention is that the lover would be led to the door where the tiger would emerge. At one side of the coin, the princess could lead her lover to the door to the lady. There is the possibility that the Princess could love him so much and would not even dare seeing the consequence that he would be devoured by the ferocious tiger. As Stockton initially emphasized, â€Å"she was the apple of his eye, and was loved by him above all humanity† (3). The love that was supposedly shared happily between them for several months was enough to ensure that the Princess would like him to live and spare his life from being killed by the tiger. Likewise, the princess’ skills, power, and notoriety exemplify possessing sim ilar traits as that of his father, the king. Therefore, by leading her lover to the door to the lady, she could think of ways and means to send that lady to the same fate that her lover encountered. As she used her skills and power to determine which particular door contains the lady and which one contains the tiger, she could likewise use this power to manipulate the fate and destiny of the lady who would supposedly marry her lover. By saving him from being eaten, she still has the chance to look forward to a life with him somehow in the near future. On the other hand, the princess could also lead her lover to the door which contains the tiger. It was explicitly stated that the princess hated the lady since â€Å"often had she seen, or imagined that she had seen, this fair creature throwing glances of admiration upon the person of her lover, and sometimes she thought these glances were perceived, and even returned† (Stockton 4). The jealousy and alleged burned agony that the princess felt as she imagines her lover being married to the lady was just unbearable. As such, there is greater possibility that the princess would rather see her lover die by being devoured by the tiger, rather than see him wed to another woman. The reflective question noted could also possess validity: â€Å"Would it not be better for him to die at once, and go to wait for her in the blessed regions of semi-barbaric futurity?† (Stockton 6). The princess could decide that it would be better for her lover to have met his death in this world and that their love story to be continued in the afterlife. Even if she could save her lover from the pangs of the tiger by leading him to the lady, there were no laws in their kingdom that would allow them to continue and consummate their love for each other. Thus, if she could not have him for herself; then, by all possibilities and given her devious and scheming demeanor, she would most probably lead her lover to the door containing t he tiger. The personality and character of the princess parallels the personality of the king. In this regard, one doubts that the princess would allow her lover to be married to another lady, of whom she detests. She would rather see him killed than know that he lives and be married to someone else. The agony and jealousy that she would have to contend for the rest of her life would be too much to
